The Barn

THE VENUE: Situated on a small patch of land across from the Hollywood Bowl, the Lasky-Demille Barn (aka, “The Barn”) was one of Hollywood's first film studios. Built as part of a citrus ranch in about 1895 on what is now the southeast corner of Selma and Vine Streets, it originally housed horses, carriages, hay, and other farm supplies. In 1913, director Cecil B. DeMille and his partners Sam Goldwyn and Jesse Lasky rented the barn for $250 a month to shoot Hollywood's first full-length feature film, a Western called The Squaw Man. After a number of relocations, in February 1983 the barn was moved to its present site and permanent home, where it was restored and turned into the Hollywood Heritage Museum.
